After the reconstruction of the Galley Ho, the NSWF created a large meadow that buffers the Community Garden from the Galley Ho building and camouflages a state-of-the-art low profile septic system. The meadow designed by Stacy Paetzel, a local landscape architect, has paths mown through it so you can enjoy the flowers and grasses. On Earth Day 2016, a group of volunteers, including New Suffolk School children and a troop of Girl Scouts, planted a selection of pollinators and native plants which attract a variety of birds and butterflies.

After five summers of minimal maintenance the meadow had been taken over by invasive varieties that were squeezing out the original plants. During the Fall of 2020 a group of novice gardeners began the back breaking work of rejuvenating the Meadow.

After a year of pulling and hauling tons of mugwort to the landfill, we started planting native plants in the hopes of creating a meadow filled with beautiful flowers to attract insects and passersby.

We now call ourselves the Meadow Mavens. We welcome new Mavens to share the task of caring for this beautiful garden.  Come visit and wend your way through the garden to see the rainbow colors created by our native plants and pollinators.
