After the reconstruction of the Galley Ho, the NSWF created a large meadow to buffer the Community Garden from the Galley Ho building and camouflage a low profile septic system. On Earth Day 2016, a group of volunteers, including New Suffolk schoolchildren and a troop of Girl Scouts, planted a selection of pollinators and native plants which attract a variety of birds and butterflies.
Eventually, after five summers of minimal maintenance, the meadow was overtaken by invasive varieties that out competed the original plants. Finally, in the Fall of 2020 a group of novice gardeners began the back breaking work of rejuvenating the Meadow.
After a year of pulling and hauling tons of highly invasive plant, mugwort, to the landfill, they began planting native plants in the hopes of creating a meadow filled with beautiful flowers to attract insects and passersby. With constant care, the Meadow is thriving, more than fulfilling our dreams.
This group is now called the Meadow Mavens. New Mavens are gladly welcomed to share the task of caring for this beautiful garden.
Come visit and wend your way through the garden to see the rainbow colors created by our native plants and pollinators.
